Background of the Study :
Inter-school sports competitions are increasingly recognized as pivotal in fostering a competitive spirit, teamwork, and leadership among students. In Katsina Local Government Area, Katsina State, these competitions are not only platforms for athletic performance but also influential in shaping students’ career aspirations. Participation in competitive sports exposes students to opportunities in fields such as professional athletics, sports management, and coaching (Aminu, 2023). The dynamic environment created by these competitions encourages students to strive for excellence and to envision sports as a viable career pathway. Educational reforms have underscored the importance of extracurricular activities in shaping students’ personal and professional development. Inter-school sports competitions, therefore, have become integral to this holistic approach. While some studies have highlighted the positive role of sports in fostering career development and leadership (Bukar, 2024), others caution that excessive competitiveness may lead to stress and unrealistic career expectations (Danjuma, 2025). In Katsina, where traditional values intersect with modern educational practices, sports competitions serve not only as athletic events but also as social arenas where students encounter role models and mentors. These experiences can significantly influence career choices, offering insights into the potential of sports-related careers. However, disparities in resource allocation and coaching quality between schools may create unequal opportunities, affecting the overall impact on career aspirations. This study aims to critically appraise the influence of inter-school sports competitions on students’ career aspirations in Katsina. By examining factors such as exposure to professional sports, quality of competition, and supportive career counseling, the research intends to provide a balanced analysis of both the positive and negative outcomes of these competitions (Aminu, 2023). The ultimate goal is to inform policy and program development that can better integrate career guidance with sports initiatives, ensuring that students are well-equipped to pursue diverse professional opportunities beyond the playing field.
Statement of the Problem :
Despite the growing prevalence of inter-school sports competitions in Katsina, there is limited empirical evidence on their effect on students’ career aspirations. While these competitions are designed to promote athletic excellence and inspire professional ambitions, concerns exist regarding the potential for undue pressure and the creation of unrealistic career expectations (Bukar, 2024). Many students, particularly those from well-resourced schools, may benefit from enhanced exposure to sports professionals and advanced training facilities, while those from less privileged backgrounds may lack access to these advantages, leading to an imbalance in career opportunities (Danjuma, 2025). The competitive nature of these events can sometimes shift the focus from academic and diverse career development to an exclusive emphasis on sports. Furthermore, the lack of integrated career counseling within these competitions often leaves students without proper guidance on balancing athletic pursuits with alternative career paths. This gap between the potential benefits of sports competitions and the realities of unequal resource distribution and support mechanisms necessitates a critical examination. The study aims to investigate the factors that mediate the relationship between inter-school sports participation and career aspirations, and to explore ways to mitigate any negative consequences while enhancing the positive impacts (Aminu, 2023).
